Eve 6 Media HQ exclusive interview with Max and Tony from October, 2007

I felt that this got lost in the fray back in October, so I am reposting it for all to enjoy once again:

Max and Tony of Eve 6 were kind enough to take time out of their lives and answer some burning questions for the Eve 6 Media HQ community. What follows are the answers - unedited - straight from the guys. Enjoy!

•1. What was the best part about taking that year off from any major projects (other than the songs that you wrote) and did the time off teach you any new insight that will reflect in your new music with The Sugi Tap?
It gave us a chance to look at our lives objectively, outside of any band context. It was a very liberating feeling for us. And in that, we found a sincere appreciation for this thing that we're privileged enough to do: create music. It also made us realize that we do in fact enjoy making music together, so why not keep doing it?

•2. If Jon wasn't in Monsters are Waiting, would you guys have called him to see if he would be interested in playing in the Sugi Tap or possibly reuniting as Eve 6?
We actually did just that, and he expressed that he was content playing in Monsters full-time and also starting his own career as a producer here in LA. We have an agreement with him and he's totally OK with us carrying on the band name in his absence. Things are good between us.

•3. Max: What is the writing process like for you? Can you explain the journey a song takes from an idea in your notebook to being a finished work? Roughly how long does it take from start to finish and has this process changed from the days in Eve 6 to today with the Sugi tap?
Max: "It just comes from an inspired moment. Sometimes a lyrical phrase will pop into my head along with a melody and that can start it off. The truth is, how does it happen? You sit down with an acoustic guitar and it either happens or it doesn't. Once an idea feels like it has potential, Tony and I sit down and try to make it as good as possible. Tony helps guide the process from a raw idea or emotion of mine into a finished song. Sometimes it takes a day, sometimes it takes weeks. We've sort of found our natural balance over the years. But we just do whatever it takes to make it feel great to us."
We've also been spending the last few months writing/producing for other artists. Look for our song "We Don't Have To Look Back Now" (aka "Geographic";) on the upcoming Puddle of Mudd album (we produced the track also). There's other things in the pipeline we can't discuss at the moment, but we'll be sure to let everybody know when we can.

•4. Now that you're in another established musical act, is there anything either of you did in Eve 6 (musically) that you wish you hadn't? IE: "I wish I had taken more time with _____" or "I don't want people to remember me for ______" etc? Or are you still proud of it all?
No regrets! You can't judge too harshly the things you did when you were 18. We made the music we wanted to make at the time, just following our hearts. We're glad people enjoy it!

•5. Victoria, BOLD, Mr. Bones, and Familiar Face are old BOLD songs that have become Sugi tap songs; are there any others that will be finished within the Sugi Tap? (we heard "Can of Worms" might be Sugi-tized, any confirmation of that?)
We worked on a lot of other ideas, old and new, that nobody has heard (about 8 more fully recorded). If they surface they will be under the Eve 6 umbrella, ella, ella, ey, ey, ey...."Can of Worms" was Sugi-tized, and might be heard as an Eve 6 song in the future.

•6. What has been the most significant change in both of your lives over the past few year's since Eve 6's break-up?
Very big question, we'll save it for a rainy day or another interview!

•7. When you had your band name crisis, what (if any) were some of the other names you considered before "the Sugi Tap?"
Here's some choice selections (some serious, some not): Central, The Plaster Saints, The Sound Life, Sterling Creatures, Lucas, Hush Hush, Hey Cat!, The Bee's Knees, Remedios the Beauty, The Chamber Maids, Neuroboner. We have pages and pages more of band names that will never see the light of day....

•8. Was there ever an Eve 6 song that you got absolutely sick of performing and was there ever an Eve 6 song that you wished you performed live that you never did (and why)?
We honestly never got "sick" of playing any of our songs. Some ended up being more fun and going off more at live shows, but we never got tired of songs from overplaying them. "Anytime" is a song that we never played live, but in the last few years it's really taken on a life of it's own and become a favorite among fans. We'll be incorporating that into future sets.

•9. Tony: Do you have a preference between "behind the scenes" work w/ other bands or center stage for yourself? (Do you like producing more than performing?)
Love 'em both. They satisfy the two opposite sides of my psyche. Producing is a little more intellectual, you've got keep your eye on a multitude of things at once and make sure the ship is headed in the right direction. It's a bit of fortune-telling involved, predicting the future. It involves a lot of people skills as well, and knowledge in many areas of music. It's a fun and challenging process. Playing on stage is the opposite. It's all spirit and good times. It's living in the divine moment. Limbs and heart, that's all it takes!

•10. A few months ago, you mentioned you had roughly 15 new songs written; has that number grown? Can you also give us a listing of the tracks that you have written?
We've been writing constantly and there's too many songs and ideas to list. You'll see some of them appear on future releases.

The State of Eve 6: Matt Bair to join Eve 6 in a permanent role?

UPDATE (1/30/08): Now we have the above professional band shot from Eve 6's Myspace to fuel this speculation along a little more. Plus, we have the following:

Apparently Matt "doesn't know" if he is going to be made permanent:

The new guitar player seemed really cool. I asked him if he was permanent and he said he didn't know. So I guess we'll see about that.

This is coming from the blog of Brian Trippe, a musician from Birmingham, AL who was at the show in Nashville the other night...

Interesting that Matt didn't concretely say NO, I am just a temporary member.

Original post (12/25/07):

Nothing like starting out Christmas day with a new Eve 6 Media HQ feature and some rumor mongering. On a very infrequent basis, I will post a longer, opinion based news item on the current state of Eve 6. This is the first installment.

Before I start, let me make it perfectly clear that UNLIKE most of what you see posted on this site, what I am about to type is without ANY inside information, or discussion with members of Eve 6.

First off, let me start with a small introduction of the ever talented Matt Bair.

Matt is currently titled as "touring guitarist/backup vocals for Eve 6" (not official, but what I would call him if there was an official title). As you all should know by now, Jon Siebels (former guitarist of Eve 6) decided NOT to rejoin the band when Max and Tony decided to start it back up in Mid-2007. That left a HUGE hole to fill at the guitarist/backup vocals position in the band. Luckily, there was someone who had followed Eve 6 since his pre-teen years, knew all of the songs front and back, AND was the charismatic and talented lead singer of a band called "Bandcamp" that was signed to a major record label (E.V.L.A Records, an extension of Atlantic Records). It also just so happened that same someone had built a friendship with Max Collins since his band toured with Eve 6 at the end of 2003 and was close enough that he featured Max's vocals on an amazing song called "Situation Lose Lose" on Bandcamp's label debut.

That someone was Matt Bair and when Eve 6 decided to play their "comeback shows" in October, 2007 he was the guy that Max and Tony turned to. After weeks of rehearsing and working out the kinks, Eve 6 along with their brand new "touring" guitarist Matt Bair ROCKED the house in their two performances, as evidenced by the videos on this site and on YouTube.

It was completely understandable for Matt to have played those shows - he was familiar with the music and he was a friend of Max. To top it off, his band Bandcamp was on a mini-hiatus as their label debut "Wanna Dance" had run out of steam after failing to gain much footing in the music world.

Fast forward to last week (Mid-December, 2007) and the Eve 6 community gets ROCKED with the news that Eve 6 is playing 6 (eventually 7) MORE "comeback" shows including 2 in the great white North of Alaska (BRRRRRRR). As an Eve6MediaHQ super-sleuth, I immediately texted Matt to see if he was playing the shows. To my surprise he responded immediately that he was. Matt's band has now been out of commission for almost half of a year, the other members are working on side-projects and Matt has recently stated that right now Bandcamp is in a "regrouping" mode. Now, on top of all that, Matt is playing 7 more shows with Eve 6.

To cut to the chase here, I honestly believe that an Eve 6 and Matt Bair "marriage" makes sense for all involved. Eve 6 needs a SMOOTH transition to a new guitarist, while sniffing out their new opportunities in a music industry that is in turmoil. Matt needs a gig after his long-tenured band, Bandcamp seems to have finally run out of steam.

I know there are a lot of you out there who believe that Eve 6 just isn't the same without Jon playing guitar and singing backup vocals. Before refuting that, let me state how much I enjoyed Eve 6 with Jon and all of the original members. Jon is a great person and gave us all many memories - including memories for myself not only a band member, but as a friend when I became close with the guys back in 2003.

Now let me state facts - Jon is a VERY replaceable guitarist/backup vocalist. Even if Max and Tony had EVER felt this way, they would NEVER say it because they are still friends with Jon and there is ABSOLUTELY no ill-will there. Max and Tony WANTED Jon to come back, but he is happy with his current band "Monsters Arw Waiting". However, the facts remain that Eve 6 has NEVER sounded tighter than at the two shows in October, 2007. Some of my opinion could be tainted because I hadn't seen the band perform in 3 years and was chomping at the bit for an Eve 6 show, but many in attendance at those shows would agree.

So, that brings us to today, Christmas 2007. This is as exciting of a time as there has been for the band "Eve 6" since the early portion of the Millenium. Shows are booked, fans are excited and they are only in their upper 20's. Now, they have a "touring guitarist" who isn't even 21 years old yet and oozes youthful exuberance. As a teenager, his older brother took him to Eve 6 shows and he sang every word, dreaming of one day being a rockstar like Max Collins was. Now, he is IN the band, even if it isn't permanent or official. There is no evidence WHATSOEVER that Matt even WANTS to permanently be in the band or that Eve 6 wants him to be the new guitarist. As a long-time Eve 6 fan and someone that knows all parties on a somewhat personal basis, let me be the first to implore everyone to simply make it official - MAKE MATT BAIR THE NEW GUITARIST FOR EVE 6!

LAST MINUTE NEWS - Eve 6 on the radio this morning!!! 9:30 - 11:30 AM EASTERN TIME

Updated UPDATE: Eve 6 was not only on for the last 5 minutes because of them being late. It was simply Mancow's terrible format for the show.

UPDATE: Due to circumstances beyond their control, Eve 6 arrived late to the studio. Therefore, they were only on for about 5 minutes. They mentioned that a CD will be out LATE this year or early 2009 and they played about a minute of Pick Up The Pieces(Thanks to Tom from the message boards for the scoop). I personally missed the segment. At the website you can choose to sign up for a month to listen to their archives ($5.95) but I'd say it isn't even worth it. What a bummer that things got messed up.

From the rumor mill: two new Eve 6 shows for March/April

Thanks to our super-sleuth message board posters from all over the 50 States, we are able to announce here on Eve 6 Media HQ with some certainty that there are at LEAST a couple of more Eve 6 shows in the works.

First, on March 27, 2008, it looks like Eve 6 will be heading to the Keystone State and will play at a club called Goodfellas in Pottsville, PA.

So far, message board poster "pixie the psyco" (I don't think she's really crazy, its just a username) has posted the following:

My brother was there last weekend, and said he saw it on their marquee, so obviously he called me up right away. hopefully its all ages, i won't be 21 in time...

In addition, message board poster MarHaha says:

Per Goodfellas, a show is in the talks, but nothing is signed.

Finally, on the website, it shows the following:

Stay tuned for the following National Acts :

BRET MICHAELS

So, there you have it. Looks like Eve 6 will be playing a show in PA on or around 3/27/07. This also leads me to believe that Eve 6 will be playing other shows in the area around that time as a trip out East to play one small club in Pottsville PA doesn't really make fiscal sense.

For more info on the club, click here. FYI, most shows are 21+, but there is the occasional All Ages (14+ with parent) show.

As for the other show, message board poster "insideoutleech" posted the following:

This is word for word the e-mail that I got. "Hey Michael, We really appreciate you e-mailing us suggestions and we apologize for not getting back to you quickly. We are working on our website so hopefully that will be updated very soon. It has not been officially announced yet, but we'd like you to know that we actually have booked Eve 6 for Springfest on April 19th. So...don't be speechless and let your friends know that they'll be here in April! Thanks again for all of your suggestions! Patti Wolf Director"

Looks pretty solid that Eve 6 will be playing at Washington State - Pullman's Springfest. This is a yearly FREE all-day, outdoor, festival type of show. Seems like it will be a lot of fun.

Anyway, I will pass along any other leads I get, but if you want the most UP to date information from all of our great posters head on over to the Eve 6 Media HQ Message Board

Apparently Mar (from the Media HQ message boards) also has video footage and will hopefully be uploading it in the coming weeks. Here is the ROUGH setlist from Gwenabe11:

ok so don't quote me on the exact order here...pretty close but really who can remember. i went through all the cds...and here's what they played.

Hopefully we will have downloadable versions of all of these videos up on the site in the next few weeks.

Be sure to discuss all of this on the Message Boards
